also stages the annual Hemis festival. The Gompa, nestled in a gorge and
surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, was built in the 18th century and
houses a wide range of beautiful frescoes, thankas, Buddha statues and an
excellent library. On the way back to Leh, we visit the superbly situated, 16th
century, Thiksey Gompa, which is perched on a hill top. The Gompa houses
an important collection of Tibetan-style books, a huge Buddha statue and
some excellent works of art. Last stop is the ruined Shey Palace, once the
summer palace of the pre-Tibetan kings. The palace monastery houses a
large, bronze, blue haired Buddha statue. Back to Leh hotel for dinner and
overnight.

Lamayuru
Morning after breakfast drive about 5hrs. (125 kms) to visit
the Lamayuru monastery, visit Yangdrung monastery - the
oldest monastic establishment in Ladakh, set on a high
boulder. Afternoon drive to Uletokpo. O/n camp.
Day 17:
Uletokpo

Ridzong
Morning after breakfast visit to Ridzong monastery and
Nunnery (about 3hrs. walk). Later drive about an hour to
Alchi, visit the monastery. O/n hotel/ guest house.
Day 18:
Alchi

Likir
Morning after breakfast drive to Leh takes about 3hrs.(70
kms). Enroute visit Likir monastery one of the biggest "yellow
hats" monastery in Sham Valley. Also visit the huge open
Buddha statue. O/n hotel
